The practice of aromatherapy is mainly based on the use of pure essential oils, which are plant-derivatives containing the essence or the aroma. Each aroma or oil has a specific effect on mind and body. Essential oils are used for both aromatherapy and massage. Since different types of oils have different effects on mind and body, one may be mixed with two or more to develop a special fragrance for a special purpose.

The production of essential oils is an intricate and a delicate process. To produce a small bottle of an essential oil, many hundred kilograms of the parent plant or flower are needed. For example 2000 kilograms of rose petals may be needed to produce a liter of its essential oil.

Currently there is much demand for pure essential oils. Purity may come from a number of factors including the manner in which the parent plant has been cultivated. Organic and non-organic essential oils are found in the markets. Organic essential oils come from plants cultivated without use of pesticides, herbicides, irradiation, or any form of unnatural treatment. Non-organic oils come from plants that have passed through all these. There is all likelihood that these will contain toxic and unnatural substances that one may be allergic to, or which may do more harm than good to the user. There is nothing as good as using a 100% pure essential oil. Since excessive use of essential oils can be dangerous and since they are very concentrated, these are diluted at the time of use by another oil, which is called carrier oil. Almond oil, jajoba oil, apricot Oil, and olive oil etc are all carrier oils. Be it an essential oil or a carrier oil, they should be stored in a cool dark place on account of their volatile nature and sensitivity to ultra violet light.

The art and science of using volatile oils for the psychological and physical well-being is called aromatherapy. These volatile oils are derived from plants. Essential oils are used the most in aromatherapy on account of their innumerable benefits they have on the mind-body system of human beings. There are many types of essential oils that are used in aromatherapy to fetch different therapeutic results.

Aromatherapy is said to trigger certain biochemical responses in the brain that in turn activate certain dormant function of the body and mind to impart a sense of well-being. Since aromatherapy is widely practiced, there is an array of products in the market that are sold as aromatherapy products, but actually are not. Sometimes even certain types of perfumes are passed on as aromatherapy oils.

The fakes do not get the desired results that one would expect from a real aromatherapy product. The fakes normally use fragrance oils in place of true aromatherapy oils. So while buying an aromatherapy product it should be ensured that the brand belongs to a reputed company and the ingredients are clearly listed on the container.

Aromatherapy has been in use for thousands of years now, even if it came to be known as aromatherapy somewhere after 20th century. Aromatherapy is said to be of Chinese origin. Egyptians have used aromatherapy by drawing distilled oils from cinnamon, nutmeg, cedar wood, clove, and myrrh. From Egyptians it is said to have passed on to Greek. Aromatherapy has also been used by Persians and Indians thousands of years ago.

Backed by a rich history, it is only in 19th century that the perfumery industry woke up to the benefits of using aromatherapy for financial gains. This was also the time when aromatherapy began to be tested in scientific laboratories for understanding the important mechanisms of aromatherapy products on mind and body. As a result of its impact on mind, aromatherapy is also considered as a forte of people indulging in spiritual practices.

Allergies affect approximately 60 million Americans, which means one in every five adults or children suffer from them, and are common in men as well as in women. Thirty-five million people have upper respiratory symptoms, which are allergic reactions to airborne pollen. Around 10 million Americans have allergies to cats and two million present severe reactions to various insect stings.

Food allergies are less common in the family of allergies. About one out of three people pretend to have a food allergy and only about three to eight percent of children younger than three years old, and only one percent of adults really have an allergic reactions to food.

Unfortunately, food allergies are blamed for close to 200 deaths every year. Scientists say that allergies have to do with genetics. If one parent has allergies, there are 33% chances that each child will suffer from a form of allergy. If both parents are allergic, it is very much possible (seven cases out of 10) that their children will be allergic, too. If we are to discuss about allergies, we should have in view the fact that allergies usually stay with adults, while children sometimes outgrow them.

An allergy is in fact the response of your body to something that it perceives as a threat. Your body fights the allergen in the same way it would fight a virus or a bacterial infection. We can take as an example the pollens of some plants that are small and light and can be taken away by the winds for miles. Ragweed pollen has been found 400 miles out at sea and two miles up in the atmosphere.

Do your eyes water? Does your throat itch? Perhaps you get a runny nose during certain times of the year. These are some of the common signs of an allergic reaction. Others could include itchy ears, a skin rash, swollen eyes, and a host of other symptoms that suggest you may be allergic to something in your environment. If these things persist or develop over time, see your doctor about medical testing to determine whether you have true allergies or perhaps more vague sensitivities to temporary irritants, like smoke, household cleaning chemicals, or attic dust.

Experts claim that allergy diagnoses have increased significantly over the past few decades. Improved home insulation that keeps out bad weather but also seals in airborne contaminants may be one of the reasons. Another might be due to the fact that more children are receiving better and earlier health care, which reveals childhood allergies sooner than before.

Whatever the reason, if you suspect a loved one has allergic reactions in response to any type of household allergen, ask your doctor to confirm the allergy and then take steps to control or eliminate it.

1. Many people have pet allergies, which typically is a response to a dog or cat’s skin dander that dries and sloughs off, much as human skin does, usually imperceptibly. Don’t let your pets sleep in your bedroom, which will provide at least eight hours of separation daily from this allergen. Bathe and groom your pets frequently, and vacuum two or three times a week.

2. Dust mites and their excrement irritate some people’s skin and nasal passages. Encase your mattress and pillows with plastic covers to kill the tiny creatures that inhabit those areas. Or, if this is uncomfortable, wash pillows and bedding in hot water with detergent, which will help to reduce if not eliminate the mite population. At least weekly, vacuum carpets, fabric furniture, draperies, and other similar areas that house the mites.

3. Food allergies are common, especially to products like nuts, eggs, shellfish, and chocolate. When you identify specific food groups as the problem, find healthy substitutes and check all processed foods before purchasing them to be sure they do not contain even minuscule amounts of the food group allergens. For example, someone who is allergic to nuts also may be sensitive to foods cooked in peanut oil.

4. Those with seasonal allergies should stay indoors in the early morning or on windy days and run the air conditioner to clean indoor air.

Keep antihistamines on hand, along with medication to manage serious reactions if someone is prone to these. Sensitization injections are available for certain types of allergies to gradually increase a person’s tolerance of those substances. However, this can take years, so be patient. Life-threatening reactions must be managed rapidly by injecting the person with epinephrine from a kit that he or she should carry everywhere. Seek emergency treatment if you or someone else develops a rapid or irregular heartbeat, feels faint, or experiences difficulty in breathing.

Ever since its birth, the great Indian art of yoga (rather, science of yoga) has gone through massive transformation. From restricted access to a selected few to percolating down to the masses, from one school of Gurus to thousands, from preaching in one country to a hundred, yoga has seen and undergone much more than what monkeys went through to evolve into so called “us” as we stand today. The evolution and transformation that yoga has suffered / rejoiced through the thousands of years could bewilder Patanjali if He is still studying the progress of yoga in human civilization from some parallel plane of existence. There may be a number of modern aspects the inclusion and perpetuation of which He may question (like yoga fashion), but will certainly smirk at the face of those who ask, what’s ‘hot’ got to do with yoga!

Mankind has associated words like peace, tranquility, spirituality, transcendence, union with soul etc with the art of yoga. On the other hand the word ‘hot’ has been associated with the sun, the equator, volcanoes, soup, beach wear etc. When you try and merge the meaning of the two together to get some harmony, you can come to insane conclusions like ‘yoga in the equator’, spirituality in beach wear, or even, union with one’s soul through volcanoes… mix and match, and more insanity follows. But if you are really enthusiastic about the true relationship of ‘hot’ with ‘yoga’, please visit the nearest Bikram yoga studio. As you enter a room-sized oven with semi-clad people baking in it in place of chicken, you will get a fair idea of what ‘hot’ has got to do with ‘yoga’.

We owe the development and spread of Hot yoga to Bikram Choudhury who introduced the world to performing yoga asanas in a hot room, where the temperature is somewhere close to or, beyond 105ºF and humidity is maintained at 40%. The asanas can be performed in a fast pace or, slower depending upon the level of training and stamina of the learner. It is always suggested to start with a slower pace so that the heat does not bake your brains while you are too enthusiastic to enjoy the benefits to follow. A series of 26 asanas and two breathing exercises are practiced during the sessions. Intake of water some time before the session is a must to avoid fatigue.

Bikram Yoga For Beginners can be a challenge. While learning the asanas and correcting the postures can be hassle enough, piling on the added heat and sweat can make it worse. A lot of care and caution has to be practiced in the initial stages to keep the enthusiasm high and health intact. The advantages of Bikram Yoga or, Hot yoga are many. Besides the usual benefits that yoga has to offer, practicing in hot rooms can help people loose weight and get a better and enviable shape faster than any other tried and tested methods… another point to explain what’s ‘hot’ got to do with yoga!

Many small business owners find it difficult to get started especially in today’s economy. But there are some useful ideas that might help to generate new clients and keep their business going. There are many traditional approaches to marketing that have been used before and that still generate new customers because, as you know, without customers your business will not grow. The trick is to keep those clients coming back. This is especially important for yoga instructors.

Traditional marketing techniques for yoga instructors include affiliation with a professional association that offers them networking opportunities with other yoga instructors to learn how they are growing their businesses. Sometimes they can collaborate with other instructors to form backup for their business as well as the opportunity to learn what is going on in their field. Networking within the community where they live or where their business is located can also lead to more clients. Examples of this include joining the local Chamber of Commerce or other weekly professional groups that may possibly generate new clients through the additional exposure offered.

Use of social media is a must in today’s world of Facebook and Twitter. Referrals are always a way to gain new business and social media provide ample opportunities for people to hear about you from satisfied customers. You can also start your business on a part-time basis until you feel confident that your business will thrive full time. It is important to have a niche that makes you stand out in the world of yoga. Figure out what that is and take advantage of it.

Yoga instructors offer classes that are not only a popular form of wellness but also very popular as a means of exercise. But it is also something that you can easily put off until the next week if you don’t feel like going. This means there are a lot of “no shows” that can hurt the business. Like any other similar businesses, yoga instructors rely on their classes being full. Along with that they are constantly seeking innovative methods of attracting new clients too.

One of the most important ways that a yoga instructor can thrive and keep clients coming back is to use an online appointment scheduling system for their classes. It’s a good idea to have the client prepay all or part of the fee and send reminders to them about the next class or appointment. You can also use the online payment option for invoicing and payment, which will reduce your workload. It is so much easier for both you and the client to do everything online through your website

If you have a Candida yeast infection, then you will find quite a few available methods for treatment on the market. And the list of treatment methods gets even longer when you think about all the different medications that require a doctor’s prescription. Candidiasis, or the yeast infection, can be successfully cured with various capsules, tablets, lotions, creams or lozenges. There are many things to think about before the correct treatment is implemented. You must consider the state of your health, are you pregnant or nursing, and is your condition the result of a yeast intolerance or was it sexually transmitted. We would tend to suggest you avoid self-diagnosis or even self-medication. Although many people do that and are able to cure their condition. If you are considering treating your suspected yeast infection alone, at least take into consideration if you are experiencing repeated yeast infections. If this is a recurring problem, you owe it to yourself to visit your clinic or doctor and have them determine why your yeast infections keep returning.

When you suspect that you have a yeast infection during your pregnancy, you need to visit your health care clinic or physician right away. If you are pregnant, and are having the symptoms of what appears to be a yeast infection, you should not make the diagnosis yourself or decide on a course of treatment. See your OB/GYN or doctor and get a concise evaluation and treatment plan. He or she probably won’t recommend any oral medications while you are pregnant.

Anti-fungal creams or vaginal suppositories may be used for yeast infection treatment. It usually takes about a week for a yeast infection to be successfully treated and eliminated. But the bottom line is to absolutely see your doctor if you are pregnant and suspect yeast infection symptoms.

There is a form of Candidiasis called oral thrush that appears in the mouth. It is quite common in babies and children, as well as adults. The antifungal compound, Nystatin, is effective for treating oral thrush. A treatment with Nystatin is very easy to do, especially with children. All is required is to rinse the mouth out with the liquid, gargle so it gets to the throat, and then swallow what’s left. However, don’t try to treat yourself if you have oral thrush. Go to your doctor and let him decide on the best treatment for you. Your doctor may want to try another approach. Another thing you don’t want to do if you or your child has oral thrush and that is to rub the white patches in an effort to remove them because you can make the areas under the patches bleed. Trying to get rid of the white patches in this manner will also cause you a lot of pain.

There are precautions that are indicated, in addition to the proper treatment, if your current yeast infection is a repeat. For instance, if your child has had oral thrush, then be sure to sterilize or wash anything that has come in contact with the child’s mouth. Another important thing to be aware of if you are breastfeeding a baby that has, or had, oral thrush, is to check the area around your breast for signs of yeast infection. If you find yourself in this situation, a consultation with your doctor is definitely in order. They can give you the correct guidance.

So it should be pretty obvious that treating a yeast infection is no simple matter. Yeast infections range from simple to life threatening. An immune system that cannot do its job for whatever reason – cancer, chemotherapy, HIV/AIDS – is the cause of these more severe forms of Candidiasis. People who have had an organ transplant are especially at risk because, in order to avoid the rejection of their new organ, they have to be put on a course of drugs that suppress their immune system. Another group that falls into the at-risk classification is chemotherapy patients.

Fexofenadine is a new non-sedating antihistamine. It is the active metabolite of terfenadine which has been withdrawn from the market in some countries. Fexofenadine is a safer alternative with similar efficacy in relieving symptoms associated with seasonal allergic-rhinitis or urticaria.

Background

Seasonal allergic rhinitis or hay fever has a significant impact on a patient’s quality of life, particularly if their sleep is disturbed. Severe symptoms can lead to lost time from work or school or impaired daily activities. A careful history is the most important part of clinical assessment. If symptoms are seasonal, pollen allergy is most likely whereas perennial symptoms suggest an allergy to dust mites, moulds or household pets. Antihistamines (H1-receptor antagonists) provide symptomatic relief (eg. from runny nose, sneezing, itchy/watery eyes). How-ever, they are ineffective for the relief of nasal congestion, in contrast intranasal corticosteroids are effective in this regard.

The newer anthistamines terfenadine, loratadine and astemizole were developed to reduce the side effects of drowsiness and dry mouth seen with the older anthistamines. Hence these newer anthistamines are favoured when such side effects are a significant problem (ie. when alertness and motor coordination are required). When drugs are in wide clinical use, rare but serious adverse events are sometimes detected. Terfenadine has been withdrawn from the market in some countries because of serious and sometimes fatal cardiac rhythm disturbances (ie. torsades de pointes). These were due to high plasma levels resulting from coadministration with ketoconazale and erythromycin or, in some patients, liver disease. Terfenadine is also contraindicated with other drugs such as HIV protease inhibitors, serotonin reuptake inhibitors, zileutin, cisapride and sparfloxacin. Similar contraindications are noted with astemizole.

Fexofenadine is the active acid metabolite. As fexofenadine requires no metabolic transformation, rare cardiac adverse events and other drug interactions should be minimized. Fexofenadine is indicated for the symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis and urticaria in adults and children older than 12. If antihistamines are to be taken then they should be used regularly and not sporadically.

Clinical Results

Placebo-controlled studies in large groups of patients (n=545 and n=861) with allergic rhinitis have demonstrated the effectiveness of fexofenadine administrated for 2 weeks at twice-daily doses of 60 mg and once-daily doses of 120 or 180 mg.

At the meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, two placebo-controlled studies were presented demonstrating significant improvement in symptoms and quality of life. Patients with moderate to severe rhinitis received fexofenadine as a twice-daily dose of 60 mg or as a once-daily dose 120 or 18 mg.

When compared with cetirizine in a double-blind trial, once-daily fexofenadine 120 or 180 mg was as effective in controlling rhinitis symptoms. The efficacy of fexofenadine also appears comparable with that of loratadine. Two double-blind studies have been presented showing that loratadine 10 mg once daily worked faster than fexofenadine 60 mg twice daily in 836 patients, and that patients who did not respond to fexofenadine had a better response to loratadine and that loratadine was less likely to fail in the first place.

Fexofenadine is also effective in the relief of symptoms associated with urticaria. A higher dose of 180 or 240 mg once daily for 6 weeks significantly reduced total symptom scores (number of wheals or hives and pruritus). At last year’s American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology meeting, three studies were presented supporting the use of fexofenadine 60 mg twice daily in the treatment of patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria.

Being a sports massage therapist can be a great career for many — it is rewarding and many like to help others relax and feel better. It’s important to not only know the typical character traits which the average successful sports massage therapist embodies, but also realize the steps you will need to follow to obtain your goal of becoming a sports massage therapist in the case that you decide it’s the right career path for you.

Sports rehabilitation techniques are typically the methods which are most often employed; obviously, many will learn these techniques in training or schooling. Therapists develop an understanding of the therapeutic care of sports-related injuries that inhibit physical activity through educational classes and programs. Through this education, they are informed of how to use proper massage techniques for specific kinds of injuries. Sports medicine facilities as well as hospitals are some of the common working grounds for sports massage therapists.

To enroll in a massage therapy program of any sort, you will definitely be needing a high school diploma, or its equivalent. Around 500 or more hours of study, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), is typically the amount of studying required in subjects such as anatomy, kinesiology, ethics, and more. Accredited schools through the Commission on Massage Therapy Association (COMTA) are typically held to a level of quality that is desirable for students seeking a high-level education in this field.

Associate’s degree programs are often offered in sports and rehabilitation therapy techniques at many colleges. Typically, students learn to diagnose and treat a variety of sports-related injuries. First aid and CPR training, and human anatomy and physiology courses are typically quite common in these college programs. Courses on massage therapy itself will usually consist of deep tissue therapy, pathology, Swedish massage, and sports massage.

The vast majority of states have laws regulating massage therapy, so it is undoubtedly an important part of becoming a sports massage therapist to ensure that you become a licensed therapist, and become a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) in accordance with state regulations.

Also, most employers of massage therapists will require that you hold a certification from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, or NCBTM. These certification requirements are typically met, however, through the usual schooling programs that these therapists undergo. Also, every four years a massage therapist certified by NCBTM will need to take 48 continuing education hours, as well as ensuring 200 working hours.

These are some of the most important requirements in becoming a successful massage therapist. It can be a rewarding career for many by helping others to reach their full potential, bring them out of pain, and put them back into good health and function. While the schooling requirements certainly aren’t a walk in the park, it’ll be worth it if this is truly what you want to do. Massage therapy has become an increasingly popular form of health treatment, so the outlook for those in this field is fairly promising.
